The hymn featured in today’s video comes by way of request. Someone asked me if I would play Thy Strong Word. Not recognizing the title, I did a little research and discovered it was the same tune as O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus, which is one of my favorites.
The tune, adapted from a Welsh melody, was composed by Thomas J. Williams in 1890. Samuel Trevor Francis wrote the lyrics in 1875. The text speaks of God’s boundless love for us.
This week, Christians around the world will be celebrating the death, burial and resurrection of God’s only Son, Jesus Christ, and many will be singing this hymn:
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, vast, unmeasured, boundless, free!
Rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me!
Underneath me, all around me, is the current of Thy love
Leading onward, leading homeward to Thy glorious rest above!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, spread His praise from shore to shore!
How He loveth, ever loveth, changeth never, nevermore!
How He watches o’er His loved ones, died to call them all His own;
How for them He intercedeth, watcheth o’er them from the throne!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, love of every love the best!
‘Tis an ocean vast of blessing, ’tis a haven sweet of rest!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, ’tis a heav’n of heav’ns to me;
And it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to Thee!
These are very unsettling times we live in, and as we struggle to deal with a global pandemic and the restrictions placed upon us, most all of us have had to make some sacrifices. I would like to encourage you to consider the ultimate sacrifice Christ paid as he demonstrated his “deep, deep love” for us. Thank you for listening!
“6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:6-8 (NKJV Strong’s)
“14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
Ephesians 3:14-19 (NKJV Strong’s)
