Today’s video features the hymn, “I Love To Tell The Story,” written by Kate Hankey in 1866. Kate was born in Clapham, England in 1834 and was the daughter of a wealthy banker. She was associated with a group of evangelical Anglicans in the Clapham area which helped establish the British and Foreign Bible Society. Kate also promoted the abolition of slavery, taught Bible classes for shop girls in London, visited the sick in hospitals, and supported various missions.
The text for the hymn was taken from a long poem Kate wrote on the life of Christ. She wrote the poem during a period of long convalescence following a serious illness. The first part of the poem is the source for the lyrics to her other well-known hymn, Tell Me the Old, Old Story.
I love to tell the story of unseen things above:
of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story, because I know ’tis true.
It satisfies my longings as nothing else could do.
I love to tell the story. ’Tis pleasant to repeat
what seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet.
I love to tell the story, for some have never heard
the message of salvation from God’s own holy word.
I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
seem hungering and thirsting to hear it, like the rest.
And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song,
’twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long.
I love to tell the story, ’twill be my theme in glory,
to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.
Thank you for listening!
