This week’s video features the hymn, “Moment by Moment.” The text was written by Major Daniel Webster Whittle. He served with Company B of the 72nd Illinois Infantry during the Civil war, marching with General Sherman’s forces through Georgia. Whittle was wounded at Vicksburg and following the war he was breveted with the rank of Major. He settled down in Chicago and went to work for the Elgin Clock Company. Whittle became associated with Dwight Moody and went into evangelistic work.
During his visit to the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, Whittle overheard a lay preacher from London comment that he did not like the hymn “I Need Thee Every Hour” because he felt he needed the Lord every moment of each day. This comment motivated Whittle to write the lyrics to today’s hymn. The music was composed by his daughter, Mary “May” Whittle Moody. Whittle wrote over 200 hymns during his life, including favorites “I Know Whom I Have Believed” and “Showers of Blessing.”
Dying with Jesus, by death reckoned mine;
Living with Jesus, a new life divine;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine,
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine.
Never a trial that he is not there,
Never a burden that he doth not bear,
Never a sorrow that he doth not share,
Moment by moment, I’m under his care.
Never a weakness that he doth not feel,
Never a sickness that he cannot heal;
Moment by moment, in woe or in weal,
Jesus, my Savior, abides with me still.
Refrain:
Moment by moment I’m kept in his love;
Moment by moment I’ve life from above;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine;
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine.

Psalms 32:8
I will guide you with My eye.
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
