Good Christian Men, Rejoice

The Christmas season is finally here! This week’s hymn, “Good Christian Men, Rejoice”, speaks of the good news of the birth of Christ.  Not much is known about this hymn. The lyrics are from a 14th century Latin carol. It was first published in 1533 in Joseph Klug’s Geistliche Lieder.

The text was translated by John Mason Neale one of the most prominent translators of hymns from Latin, Greek and other languages. Some well known hymns he translated include other Christmas hymns “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” and “Of The Father’s Love Begotten” as well as “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” and “Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation”.

The tune for todays’ hymn, “IN DULCI JUBILO”, comes from a 14th century German folk dance melody.

Good Christian men, rejoice
With heart and soul and voice;
Give ye heed to what we say:
News! News!
Jesus Christ is born today!
Ox and ass before Him bow,
And He is in the manger now:
Christ is born today!
Christ is born today!

Good Christian men, rejoice
With heart and soul and voice;
Now ye hear of endless bliss:
Joy! Joy!
Jesus Christ was born for this!
He has opened heaven’s, door
And man is blessed evermore:
Christ was born for this!
Christ was born for this!

Good Christian men, rejoice
With heart and soul and voice;
Now ye need not fear the grave:
Peace! Peace!
Jesus Christ was born to save!
Calls you one and calls you all
To gain His everlasting hall:
Christ was born to save!
Christ was born to save!

46 And Mary said:
“My soul  exalts the Lord,
47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
48 “For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave;
For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.
49 “For the Mighty One has done great things for me;
And holy is His name.

Luke 1:46-49

76 “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
For you will go on BEFORE THE LORD TO PREPARE HIS WAYS;
77 To give to His people the knowledge of salvation
By the forgiveness of their sins,
78 Because of the tender mercy of our God,
With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us,
79 TO SHINE UPON THOSE WHO SIT IN DARKNESS AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH,
To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Luke 1:76-79
