Are You Washed In The Blood

The hymn “Are You Washed In The Blood” was written and composed in 1878 by Elisha A Hoffmann. The son of an Evangelical minister, Hoffmann graduated from Union Seminary in New Berlin, Pennsylvania in 1868. Following his graduation he became ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1873. He pastored churches in Cleveland and Grafton, Ohio in the 1880s, Benton Harbor, Michigan in the 1890s, and completed his years ministering in Cabery, Illinois. He passed way in 1929 in Chicago, Illinois.

Throughout his childhood Hoffmann was exposed to hymns, singing them both in church and at home during family devotions. Despite any formal training in music, he composed over 2,000 hymns during his life, often writing both the lyrics and composing the music. Several familiar hymns still sung today include “Down At The Cross”, “Leaning On The Everlasting Arms”, “Are You Washed In The Blood” and “I Must Tell Jesus”.

Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Are you fully trusting in His grace this hour?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Are you walking daily by the Savior’s side?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Do you rest each moment in the Crucified?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

When the Bridegroom cometh will your robes be white?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Will your soul be ready for the mansions bright,
And be washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Lay aside the garments that are stained with sin,
And be washed in the blood of the Lamb;
There’s a fountain flowing for the soul unclean,
O be washed in the blood of the Lamb!

Refrain:
Are you washed in the blood,
In the soul-cleansing blood of the Lamb?
Are your garments spotless? Are they white as snow?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Psalms 51:7 (NKJV)

18 “Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says the LORD,
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool.

Isaiah 1:18 (NKJV)

7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Ephesians 1:7 (NKJV)

6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

1 John 1:6-7 (NKJV)
